As the leading multifamily innovator and architecture firm in North America, we rely on our incredible team of designers to do more than create communities around the world for clients– they champion projects through to completion. As Architectural Intern in our Dallas office, Diana Hernandez works on many of HPA’s most forward-thinking projects and has lent her exceptional design talent to numerous HPA-designed multifamily communities around the world. A native of Mexico that received her masters degree in Barcelona, Spain, Diana brings a one-of-a-kind, international eye to her work here at HPA.

Let’s get to know Diana outside (and inside) the office and see what makes her a true icon of #HumphreysHeroes culture:

  1. Where is your hometown?

Saltillo, Mexico. It’s a beautiful, comfortable size city surrounded by mountains– not too big, not too small. Saltillo has won awards for being one of the best cities in Mexico in which to live. I miss my hometown, but living abroad helps you grow so much and broadens your perspective on life. I completed my masters in Barcelona, Spain, and then moved to the USA, but I go home as much as possible.

  1. What architects inspire you?

Frank Gehry – I love his work, but it’s one of those infatuations that doesn’t transfer to my work. A lot of his work’s constructability isn’t practical, but I appreciate his mastery. I also admire a few Mexican architects whose design innovation competes with international tastes, like Fernanda Canales. And, I adore Barragan – his use of colors is extraordinary!

  1. What’s the best movie you’ve seen recently?

Oops – I can’t remember! I’m all about watching Spanish television series right now. I spend all day speaking English, so it’s nice to go home, relax and watch TV in Spanish. If you’re interested, I suggest watching Money Heist, and if you want an excellent telenovela-style, Velvet.

  1. What’s your favorite thing about working at HPA?

Ever since I began my architecture studies, I’ve always wanted to design plans and work towards creating innovative big buildings, and now I’m doing that here at HPA. Being able to be a part of complex, large-scale project keeps me engaged and passionate about my work.

  1. What are your hobbies when you’re off duty?

We have to stay healthy! So I enjoy cycling, and I would encourage everyone at HPA to join our monthly ride. A group of us get together, and it builds teamwork skills and teaches you a lot about the city you live in – all with just a bike!

I also paint in my free time, and I have my artwork on my personal website: www.dianahdz.com. I’m currently contributing to an exhibition at Bishop Arts in Dallas, TX.

  1. What are your current professional goals?

I’m studying to take my first Registered Architect Exam. I’m pumped and ready to become a certified architect as soon as possible. With everything I’m learning while studying for the exam, I’m excited to see how it’s going to make me a better colleague and person.

  1. What’s your favorite genre of music?

By this time in my life, I’ve listened to them all! Right now I’m listening to this Spanish band Vetusta-Morla and Ed Sheeran. For stressful days: storm sounds. It’s decompressing white noise.

We hope you have enjoyed getting to know Diana, one of our world-class team members here at HPA! Stay tuned for more #HumphreysHeroes blog posts in the future. In the meantime, engage with us on FacebookTwitterLinkedIn and Instagram for all things HPA-related.
