Jennifer Smith-Burns is our amazing Vice President of Production and joined the Dallas office in April of 2006. She is an integral part of the HPA family and the production team, so we asked her a few questions.

Why did you become an architect?
My father was a carpenter when I was young and I used to play with all of the scrap wood and make imaginary cities. Also, when I told a friend that I wanted to go into architecture he said, “oh, you will never make it.” So a bit of spite helped me along the way.

Where did you go to school? What was your major?
University of Texas at Arlington, Bachelor of Science 2002

Any special talents you have or something you think people would find interesting?
I can do a pretty great Greg Faulkner impersonation.

What are you most proud of accomplishing?
Personally – I have the most fantastic little 6 year old girl that makes me laugh every day. Professionally – that we have such a great group of people in the production department and I consider many of them true friends. It’s pretty tough to beat working with your friends.

Any upcoming news in your life that you would like to share?
Paul Burns (Director of IT) asked me to marry him and I said yes.

What has been your favorite project at HPA?
Crescent Club in New Orleans. It was a long and very challenging through construction, but I feel like it taught me many things about patience and persistence. It was also one of the first multi-family projects to be completed after Hurricane Katrina. The fact that it gave so many people a place to live made it all worth it in the end.

Do you have a favorite quote?
“Work hard and be nice to people”…Every trendy etsy store
“Though she be but little, she is fierce!”…Shakespeare

What is one thing on your bucket list?
I want to go rockhounding. I will one day retire and become a prospector.

Do you have a nickname?
Jenn, JSVP, Jenn Smith, Smithers
