As the #1-ranked multifamily architecture firm in North America, Humphreys & Partners relies on our incredible team from around the world to create innovative, one-of-a-kind communities. As Design Director, Brad Lutz’ primary focus is on the beginning stages of a project – working hand-in-hand with our designers and the clients to formulate programs and visions for the project. Since starting at HPA in 2006, Brad has held the role of Intern Architect, Business Developer, and Director of Business Development. Let’s get to know Brad outside (and inside) the office and see what makes him a true icon of #HumphreysHeroes culture:

  1. What is your alma mater?

I am a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, GO ILLIN! I nearly gave up on the architecture program sophomore year and considered a switch to aviation, but stuck it out! Getting a pilot’s license is still on my bucket list.

  1. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Crystal Lake, IL, a suburb northwest of Chicago. Its motto was “a good place to live.”

  1. What are your hobbies outside of the office?

Pre-COVID, we were major travel junkies. Closer to home, favorites are enjoying as much time by/in/around the lake as possible and biking around our beautiful city! I also am a musician and play piano and guitar for fun and relaxation.

  1. What is your favorite place you’ve ever visited?

I could pick a handful throughout our favorite country to visit (France), but probably the most memorable spot has been Eze, an incredible Medieval village in the cliffs above the Mediterranean — AMAZING and unforgettable views.

  1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I was obsessed with cars (still am), and always wanted to be a car designer. There are still sketchbooks in my childhood home with drawings that are pretty laughable today. Audi, Tesla, Volvo are you listening?

  1. Who/what inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

Growing up, there were always sketch pads and art supplies around, and I loved to imagine and draw. Another big push was by way of my childhood friend next door, whose dad was an architect/engineer – we always poked around his home office and I was always intrigued by all of the drawings. The inspiration is definitely recharged/kept alive each time you walk through a completed project.

  1. What is your favorite part about working at HPA?

Probably the element of variety: every project is a new puzzle to solve, so it is really rewarding to be able to truly avoid monotony each day! There are also so many close colleagues and client friendships that have grown for me over the past 14+ years.

We hope you have enjoyed getting to know Brad, one of our world-class team members here at HPA! Stay tuned for more #HumphreysHeroes blog posts in the future. In the meantime, engage with us on FacebookTwitterLinkedIn and Instagram for all things HPA-related.
