Humphreys & Partners understands that cultivating community through design begins by creating a team of colleagues that are healthy, informed and encouraging their loved ones to be the same. Last Wednesday, October 10, OneHumphreys (the umbrella term for HPA and its affiliates including HP Civil Engineering, HPA Design Group, Glass Recycled Surfaces, Atticus Real Estate and HPLA Studio) got together in our Dallas office for a special lunch honoring October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM).

Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? This statistic makes spreading awareness and encouraging breast health discussions in our communities vital. An essential feature of the lunch were educational materials provided by the National Breast Cancer  Foundation (NBCF) that highlighted important facts about preventative measures, what questions to ask healthcare providers and where women can find free mammograms.

“We are proud to be participating in the global dialog about breast health, preventative measures that can be taken and the vital resources available to those affected by breast cancer,” said Humphrey & Partners CSO Megan Dimmer. In an internal memo penned to employees announcing the health-focused initiative, she encouraged employees to schedule a mammogram or talk with loved ones about scheduling one: “I encourage each of you to make this crucial appointment or talk to your spouse about their last mammogram, not just for yourself but your family, friends and communities.”

Below is a list of quick facts on the disease and its prevalence:

  • One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
  • An estimated 2,470 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

One of the best early detection measures is performing a breast self-exam each month, NBCF offers free guides on how to perform these. NBCF also partners with medical facilities around the U.S. to provide free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services through the National Mammography program.
