As the #1-ranked multifamily architecture firm in North America, Humphreys & Partners relies on our incredible team from around the world to create innovative, one-of-a-kind communities. John Ruthven, serves as a Project Architect at the Humphreys’ Chicago office. As a Project Architect, John manages projects on a day-to-day basis. Most of his time involves coordination of design consultants and some in-house/Uruguay staff to take projects from Design Development through Construction Administration. Let’s get to know John outside (and inside) the office and see what makes him a true icon of #HumphreysHeroes culture:

  1. What is your alma mater?

Port Huron Northern High School. Go Huskies! University of Michigan for undergrad and University of Southern California for grad.

  1. Where did you grow up?

A planet unpronounceable to humans…then Port Huron, MI. Go Huskies! Still growing up really.

  1. Who is your favorite architect and how do they inspire you?

Daniel Calugareanu, a talented guy out of Romania, is somewhat new on the scene but doing some really interesting stuff in Chicago. I can’t wait to see what he does with his basement redesign. Also Charles Swanson, big fan. He always brings a unique perspective to our low to mid-rise projects. He really brings that 10,000-foot view, he sees how the parts work together as a whole and he is tall.

  1. If you were not an architect, what would you be doing?

I would probably be in jail or dead, architecture truly saved me.

  1. What would be your last meal?

A slice of cheese pizza from Sabaros and a personal Pizza Hut pizza from Target together at the same food court.

  1. What is the best concert you have ever been to?

Definitely Britney Spears but which of the 10 times was best? Ugh…I can’t.

  1. What is the best book you have read recently?

The Choose Your Own Adventure book, “You are a Shark.” I haven’t read a new book in a while.

We hope you have enjoyed getting to know John, one of our world-class team members here at HPA! Stay tuned for more #HumphreysHeroes blog posts in the future. In the meantime, engage with us on FacebookTwitterLinkedIn and Instagram for all things HPA-related.
