The Humphreys & Partners team took home the award for “Best Meal” at the 2016 Canstruction competition. The team spent months planning and a full day building the Marty McFly-inspired DeLorean. The title of this impressive design is “Sending Hunger Back to the Future” which is appropriate for the overall Canstruction theme, “Celebrating Our Past, Present, & Future.”
“It took us several brainstorming sessions to commit to the DeLorean theme” says Canstruction team leader Alex Skorge, “we wanted to do a robot design for a while, but eventually decided to go with the DeLorean, due to design complications.”
“I anticipated that building the car doors would be our greatest challenge,” Skorge explains, “but when we started building them on Build Day, they went up just fine.”

The award for “Best Meal” is a special honor given by a local Dallas chef who is also a Canstruction juror. “Best Meal” means the items used in the structure could create a tasty meal.
A tasty meal it would certainly be. The DeLorean was comprised of over 8,000 cans and included tuna, hot chili beans, whole potatoes, white hominy, pork & beans, creamed corn, mixed veggies, and even cans of Pringles chips.
You can visit the Canstruction exhibit and see the DeLorean at the State Fair of Texas at the Museum of Nature and Science building. While you are there, be sure to vote for “The “People’s Choice” award, which will be awarded at the close of the fair.
Canstruction is a charity competition where architects, engineers and contractors compete to design and built giant structures make entirely from food cans. At the end of the competition, all of the food is donated to the North Texas Food Bank.
